Faces - Golden Mask
Golden Mask
Oil on canvas 2011 92cmx61cm This painting presents our definition of ourselves in comparison to current societal standards. The Marquardt mask, shown as the intersecting lines, is a statistical and mathematical model created to depict the perfect, ideal proportions for a beautiful human (in this case female) face. This model is based off of the Golden Ratio from antiquity as well as the Fibonacci sequence and is used as a guide in photoshopping as well as plastic surgery. Behind this mask is a self portrait aligned to the mask as it would be pre-photoshop and shows the facial irregularities which make this face not line up to the ideal. The work begs the question: does the face behind the mask lie trapped in its cage- like bars or does it refuse confinement and conformity? |
