Oil on canvas
This painting presents our definition of ourselves in comparison to current societal standards. The Marquardt mask, shown as the intersecting lines, is a statistical and mathematical model created to depict the perfect, ideal proportions for a beautiful human (in this case female) face. This model is based off of the Golden Ratio from antiquity as well as the Fibonacci sequence and is used as a guide in photoshopping as well as plastic surgery. Behind this mask is a self portrait aligned to the mask as it would be pre-photoshop and shows the facial irregularities which make this face not line up to the ideal. The work begs the question: does the face behind the mask lie trapped in its cage- like bars or does it refuse confinement and conformity?
