Portraits of Heroes
Acrylic on masonite 2012 23cmx16cm (each) This series of small panel paintings borrows from superhero comic or “nerd” culture to present five small portraits of heroes. Each features a different technique using dried acrylic paint “peels”, each reflecting the hero they depict. Bright plastic looking paint evokes associations with play and action figures whereas the mugshot compositions evoke associations with criminality and vigilantism. The paint itself peels away from the support suggesting an unmasking, which either removes or reveals identity. |
