Artist Statement
Art has always
held a particular magical power for me. Like the magician, the artist has the
power to trick the viewer into perceiving reality in illusion and, more than
that, they have the power to not simply reproduce our existing reality but also
to create new realities. The artist then, facilitates the manifestation of the imagination.
With my own work, I explore these ideas of art, reality and fantasy. My
canvases, often portraits, explore people’s relationship with personal and
cultural imagination. My sculptures, made primarily of latex or paint, question
the boundary between image and reality by freeing paint from the surface of the
canvas and giving it life in the real world. My prints examine the spaces in our minds where the imagination exists in dreaming and in waking and the moment we transition to those spaces from reality.
