After Lucien Freud
Oil and encaustic
This painting, rendered in oil and encaustic, is inspired by the work of Lucian Freud. Besides his earthy palette and honest depiction of human flesh, the work also borrows his ideas concerning the intimate relationship between artist and model. Sam has been used repeatedly in my work, partly for conceptual reasons and partly for convenience. It plays with ambiguity between who is the artist and who is the model as well as the relationship between the two. Both are aware of the viewer’s intrusion, one in irritation and one in sly mischievousness.
