Sam2 Series: 1) Samsam 2) Saxam 3) Sam2
This series of three paintings consists entirely of double portraits of two people named Sam. When the Sams are seen together by people who know of their close friendship, and they are rarely seen apart, they are referred to as Sam2, the Sams, Sam1 and Sam2, Big Sam and Little Sam. When seen by strangers, they asked if they are sisters or twins even if they have already introduced themselves as Sam and Sam. What parent names their kids the same thing? This reaction from people is based off a perceived similarity between them based on similar hairstyles, height and body type. For them, they cannot see themselves as similar; one being bird-boned, with a pixie face and glasses, and the other not. The first painting is a frontal double portrait to introduce the pair of Sams. The second splices one half of each of their faces together in order to more closely compare facial differences. The third averages and melds their features together into one face using a computer program and represents what they would really look like if they were the same. The result is a very uncanny portrait of both of them and neither of them.
